7 Fashion Staples This Summer

OK OK, I am probably not the right person to be writing a post like this. The last time I went clothes shopping was before I had Eva. I was living single and care-free in Wellington. Shopping was Ellyse and I's regular weekend activity and it was GREAT! RIP to those days. May you always be remembered fondly, ha.

I still love clothes and love shopping but unfortunately it is not a big part of my life right now. However, I actually am in desperate need of some new summer items. Seeing as I live at least and hour and a bit away from the nearest shop, my venture started online..... two seconds in, I hit a wall. What the heck is even on trend right now?! I literally spend my life in yoga pants #mumlife.

Thankfully, my other closest friend, Jade, is my fashion expert. (She is childless and works full time - the winning combo ha). So I send her a quick message...

Me: "I really need new summer clothes, what do I get?"

Jade: "Seriously, there is like literally nothing out that I like at the moment. It is so hard!"

Well, isn't that just perfect. My go-to has no idea either! Thankfully we came up with a few items together.

I am a new mama in my 20's and I want to feel like me. I want to feel young and confident. (It is not time to bring out the stereotypical mum clothes just yet). I would say my style is classic. I don't mind adding a little colour but there is never a huge amount of frilly pattern. It's not that I am against it, I think it is more that I just don't even know where to begin with making it work for me.

Anyway enough of that. If you are in the same position as me here is my shopping list of basic summer essentials. All interchangeable and won't brake your bank. Hopefully it helps.

1. A Black Denim Skirt.

I am in love with this one from Junkfood Jeans. It is Mid/high waisted, slim fit stretch denim skirt with a lightly distressed ripped look and a notch cut raw hem.

I can totally see myself wearing this on the daily with either sandals or Converse, a classic (possibly crop) tee and some oversized black sunnies.

Price: $49.95

2. A Crop T-Shrit.

This twist front crop from Forever New will definitely be one of my summer staples. Will fit effortlessly with the denim mini or denim shorts. Being super petite I love that it is cropped but not crazy much (I don't think I am confident enough to pull that off. Also, I am not 16), the crop helps to balance out my proportions a little, not that I am overly concerned about that.

This particular one comes in White, Black, Grey and Navy. I have 't 100% decided but think I will stick with either white or black.... maybe both.

Where to buy: www.forevernew.co.nz

Price: $39.99 AU ($43 NZ approx.)

3. A White Linen Boyfriend Shirt.

Thankfully I already have one of these so it is something I can pull from my current wardrobe and add to my new summer pieces.

Perfect for covering up when you have had a little too much sun but still breezy and cool. Pair with jeans, shorts or a skirt for an effortless and casual look.

Where to buy: www.glassons.co.nz

Price: $49.99 (currently on sale for $29.99)

4. Coach Sunglasses.

I currently have Ralph Lauren Aviator sunglasses. I do like them but they are at least five years old and so incredibly scratched. They have served me well but they need replacing. I went in to Sunglass Hut to get some help with finding a new pair. Anyone else struggle with finding the perfect pair of sunnies?! The shop assistant was super helpful and we ended up choosing a Coach pair. Classic black. Perfect. I have not got them as of yet (I need to save up) they are the one item on this list that isn't exactly budget friendly... Whoops. But seriously, they are my fave!

Maybe Santa will bring them to me.

Where to buy: www.sunglasshut.co.nz

Price: $264.95

5. A Linen Dress.

I don't think I would have ever tried this on but I had to for a very special occasion next year. The more I think about it the more I actually love it! It was loose and kind of flowy, super comfortable and light weight. Could easily be dressed up or down by changing up your makeup, jewelry and of course, shoes.

It comes in a few different colours but white and grey are my obvious favourites.

Quite possibly the perfect casual summer dress.

Where to buy: www.glassons.co.nz

Price: $59.99 (although on sale at the moment).

6. T-Bar Thong Sandals.

Now days my footwear choice is generally sneakers or jandals haha. Picking up and running around after a toodler all day definitely requires comfort. However I am not afraid to get the heels out when the time calls (in fact I love it) and I definitely love a cute pair of sandals to dress up a day outfit when I am out and about.

One of my friends wore these to my house the other day and they looked so cute and then she said they were from Kmart and I was sold!

The tan colour is perfect for me, as once again the petite thing comes in to play. Choosing a colour that is closer to my skin tone doesn't cut off my legs like black (or any other colour) would.

Where to buy: www.kmart.co.nz

Price: $7.00 #winning #boom

7. A Wide Brim Braid Hat.

I have generally always worn a cap but I have always loved these floppy wide brim hats. They are the perfect (and easy) accessory that is super functional. I hate getting my face burnt and I am pretty sure this will do the trick. From the beach to a cafe with the girls.... this will totally have you covered.

My very generous mother in-law has already bought this for me. (Thanks Jo) xx

Where to buy: www.kmart.co.nz

Price: $12.00

That is all I have for you right now. I am totally still trying to figure it out myself! As you can see, you can definitely mix and match all these items, not only together but with whatever else you currently have in your wardrobe. Sometimes just adding a few new basic pieces really helps.

If in doubt, keep it classic and you wont go wrong.

I hope this helps a little.

Do you have any pieces you would add to this list? I would love to know. Always open to suggestions.
